A Fourth of July Surprise: My Little Sister’s Beach Proposal in Ocean City, Maryland

Some photo sessions are extra close to my heart—and this one might be the most special yet. On July 4th, while most people were celebrating fireworks and sunshine, my family was celebrating something even bigger: my little sister’s birthday and her surprise proposal, all in one magical night in Ocean City, Maryland.
When Matt, her now-fiancé, asked me a month earlier to secretly photograph the proposal, I had to hold in the excitement! We were all heading down to the beach for our family vacation, and he wanted to make her birthday one she’d never forget. With the help of our whole crew, we pulled off a dreamy beach setup that still makes me tear up just thinking about it.
Setting the Scene: Beach, Love, and Taylor Swift
While Matt took my sister out to a fancy Japanese dinner (she thought that was her big birthday treat!), the rest of us were busy turning a quiet spot on the beach into something out of a movie. We made a big heart in the sand with candles, sprinkled rose petals, and lit tiki torches that glowed just as the sun was going down.
Everyone had a job. My little brother’s beautiful girlfriend, Lily, was on aux duty, playing the perfect Taylor Swift soundtrack as they walked up the path. The breeze was soft, the sky was the most incredible hues of blue and pink, and the moment felt like magic.
When they arrived, the look on my sister’s face said it all. Complete happiness. And then—Matt dropped to one knee. The answer, of course, was yes.
The laughter, the sparkle in her eyes, the way Matt looked at her as he opened the ring box—it was like time slowed down.
She told me later that she “didn’t know, but she was hoping!” And having her family there, and everyone cheering once the ring was on, made it feel even more special.
A Family Moment I’ll Never Forget
Photographing families is always special. But getting to capture a moment like this for my own family? There’s nothing like it. This is why I love what I do—freezing little moments that turn into big memories.
From the candles, to the hugs, to the Taylor Swift songs playing softly in the background, every detail was filled with love. It reminded me why I became a photographer in the first place: to help people feel their memories every time they look at a photo.
