Welcome to the World, Mayla | A Full-Circle Birth Story at St. Luke’s Quakertown
Some stories feel like they were written long before they ever happened.
The day sweet Mayla was born was one of those stories.
When my best friend, Shawna, asked me to be there for the birth of her daughter, I knew it would be special. What I didn’t know was just how unforgettable the day would become.
Shawna was surrounded by so much love at St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Her husband, Marty, her mom, her friend Courtney, and I spent the night waiting in anticipation for Mayla’s arrival.
As the hours passed, we laughed, encouraged, and celebrated every step closer to meeting the little girl who had already captured everyone’s hearts.
But this wasn’t just any birthday.
It was Shawna’s 30th birthday.
As midnight approached, there was a growing excitement in the room. Would Mayla make her appearance before the day ended, or would she arrive on Shawna's birthday?
The answer came shortly after midnight.
Around 12:30 in the morning, Mayla made her grand entrance into the world.
And just like that, mother and daughter shared the same birthday!
If that wasn’t special enough, there was another beautiful layer to the story.
Thirty years earlier, Shawna’s mom had given birth to Shawna.
Now, exactly 30 years later, Shawna was bringing her own daughter into the world while her mother stood nearby her side, watching it all happen.
Talk about a full-circle moment.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
Three generations of women connected by the same birthday. A grandmother witnessing her daughter become a mother again. A daughter arriving on the very day her mother was born.
Some moments simply can’t be planned.
They just happen, and they become part of a family’s story forever.
And then came one of the most incredible parts of the entire birth.
When it was finally time to push, Shawna delivered Mayla in a single contraction.
One.
Single.
Contraction.
I still can’t believe it. Incredible!
As a photographer, I was there to document every moment. As Shawna’s best friend, I was also right there beside her, holding her right leg and cheering her on as she brought Mayla into the world.
It’s hard to put into words what that felt like.
I’ve photographed weddings, families, and some of life’s biggest milestones, but witnessing my best friend become a mother again while helping support her through that push is something I will carry with me forever.
The second Mayla arrived, the room changed.
The anticipation turned into happy tears.
The waiting turned into wonder.
The love that had been growing for months finally had a face!
Watching Marty meet his daughter for the first time was beautiful. Seeing Shawna hold Mayla in her arms was even more emotional knowing everything that led to that moment.
Every person in that room already loved Mayla deeply before she arrived.
& The moment she entered the world, that love became visible.
Tiny fingers.
Tiny toes.
The sweetest little cries.
A brand-new chapter beginning.
As I photographed those first moments together, I couldn’t stop thinking about how lucky Mayla is. She entered the world surrounded by a village of people who already adored her.
Birth photography isn’t just about documenting a baby’s arrival. It’s about preserving the stories that make each birth unique. The moments that future generations will tell over and over again.
And this story is one worth telling.
Shawna, thank you for trusting me with one of the most important days of your life. Thank you for allowing me to document these memories while also standing beside you as your friend. It was one of the greatest honors I’ve ever experienced.
